Ukraine peace summit: The war between Russia and Ukraine is about to complete 28 months. Ukraine Peace Summit will be organized in Switzerland on 15 and 16 June to discuss the options related to ending this war. For this, leaders and officials of 90 countries and many organizations will gather on one platform.

According to the report of news website Al Jazeera, Russia has refused to attend this conference. Swiss President Viola Amherd said on Monday that the summit will be held despite Russia’s refusal. President Amherd said that this is not a platform for propaganda, but their aim is to bring peace.

Amherd said that the heads of state of about half of the countries participating in the summit will themselves participate in it. Apart from this, officials of other major organizations including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also be a part of it. However, US President Biden has refused to attend this conference. In his place, US Vice President Kamala Harris will attend this Ukraine peace summit.

In fact, Russia had made a strong comment on Switzerland, the organizer of the Ukraine Peace Summit, saying that it is no longer an impartial country. Russia said that Switzerland has lost its credibility by implementing the sanctions of the European Union (EU).

According to the report of news agency AP, so far more than 160 countries have been invited to attend the program. President Amherd said that he is not disappointed that despite sending invitations to so many countries, representatives of less than 100 countries are participating in it. According to the information so far, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz etc. may participate.

According to Swiss officials, the final list will be released on Friday which will reveal how many countries will be a part of this summit. He said that countries like Turkey, South Africa and Brazil have not given any indication whether they will be a part of it or not.

What is China’s stand on peace talks
China had earlier said that it would not participate in peace talks until both parties, including Russia, sit together for talks. China said that it is in favor of promoting peace talks and hopes that it will not be used to create conflict between the two groups. China made it clear that participating in peace talks does not mean wanting peace.

No decision on whether India will join or not
There is no decision yet on whether India will participate in the Ukraine Peace Summit. However, Switzerland’s Foreign Secretary Alexander Fasel visited New Delhi last month to ensure that India takes part in this conference. Swiss officials aware of the matter said that India will be a part of this program but it is not known at what level.

PM Modi and Jaishankar are not expected to attend
Officials said that it is highly likely that top leaders like PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will not attend the summit. Apart from this, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is also not expected to visit Switzerland. It is worth noting that Doval participated in the Jeddah Peace Summit chaired by Saudi Arabia in August last year.

Since 2022, peace summits have been held in Copenhagen, Jeddah, Malta and Davos. So far, top leaders like the PM and the Foreign Minister have not attended these summits. Most of the meetings have been represented by the Secretary and other officials in the Ministry of External Affairs.
