The cash-strapped Glasgow City Council is reportedly spending more than £1million on coffee machine as Scotland’s biggest local authority wants a supplier to provide and maintain “high-quality blend” appliances, according to The Scottish Sun.
The contractor who wins the project would land a five-year, three- month deal worth £1,056,520, and be tasked with providing machines that would have to supply filter and medium to high-quality coffees and tea.
Benjamin Elks, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance is critical of the spending, calling it “ridiculous spending” as the public is currently facing issues such as litter, waste and rat infestations.
“Councillors in Glasgow should wake up and smell the coffee, focus on protecting frontline services, and delivering value for money” he said, per the report.
The Glasgow City Council chief says that the plan is intended for “generating income” at popular venues such as the Royal Concert Hall and Kelvingrove Art Gallery.
“The contract is for machines and products for venues and cafes we operate used by citizens and visitors” a Glasgow City Council spokesperson said.
